Lynette Johns may not yet have earned the bachelor's in forensic science she's long coveted. But she should get an honorary degree in smart shopping for carefully doing her homework and capitalizing on a great deal at Wineberry of DeKalb, Eagle Homes' community of 180 townhomes.

Eager to work in a crime lab someday, Johns, 26, longed to buy a home with her boyfriend Andrew Stargardt, also 26. She had been living at her parent's home in Cary, but her goal was to move closer to Northern Illinois University (NIU), where she recently enrolled after earning her associate's degree at another college.

She and Stargardt desired a new construction home, but they weren't sure how much they could collectively afford. They began their search in late 2006, starting first online. Their Internet hunt brought up a listing for an intriguing new townhome community in DeKalb, only minutes away from NIU. It wasn't long before they made an on-site visit and toured the generously equipped models.

"We had never shopped for a new home before, so the whole process seemed a little intimidating," Johns recalled. "But Amanda, the sales manager, put us at ease and showed us all our options, thoroughly answering each of our questions. We could quickly see that Wineberry had a lot going for it."

Johns and Stargardt weren't just wowed by the low starting prices from the $140,000s. Their eyes got a whole lot bigger when Amanda said there was currently a discount of up to $5,000 off the price plus a no-money-down financing special available.

The couple learned that the financing offer applies to buyers who opt for a home mortgage loan through Eagle Homes' preferred lender. The buyer must qualify for either 100 percent financing or an 80/20 loan and is required to put down at least $500 to cover closing costs at the time of contract-an amount which is fully refunded at the time of closing.

"We liked the fact that the financing was through Chase, which is the lender Andrew and I do all our banking through-checking, savings, credit card, you name it," Johns said. "Most of all, the idea of not having to put any money down for closing costs and the rest was an especially enticing one for first-time buyers like us."

Even better, the long-time sweethearts were able to select a Brighton design townhome that was move-in ready by January 31-the same day they're scheduled to close. The Brighton features two bedrooms, one-and-a-half baths, a full basement, and 1,271 square feet of living space.

"Lynette loves the large windows and the vaulted ceilings and two-story foyer, which add a lot of depth and space. But I'm most looking forward to enjoying that big basement, which is perfect for a rec room," said Stargardt.

Johns also can't wait to get into her new kitchen, which will be equipped with all the necessary appliances as a standard amenity.

"It's almost hard to believe how much home we're getting for the money at Wineberry," Johns said. "This was the perfect opportunity that came along at just the right time."

In all, buyers can select from four unique Wineberry designs-including a ranch, a split level, and two 2-story townhomes. Every Wineberry residence comes with two to three bedrooms, one to three baths, a two-story Great Room (per plan), attached two-car garage and optional basement. Sizes vary from 800 to 1,743 square feet, with base prices ranging from $142,490 to $176,990 (all prices subject to change without notice).

For shoppers in a hurry to move in, Eagle Homes has a wide selection of townhomes that are available in as few as 30 days, allowing you to be settled into your new townhome before spring. Wineberry also has some of the lowest homeowner's association fees around-only $75 a month, which covers all lawn care, snow removal, exterior maintenance and more.

Wineberry is located next to 2.3 acres of dedicated open space and is conveniently accessible to I-88, DeKalb shopping (including a new Super Wal-Mart), Northern Illinois University, Kishwaukee Hospital, live theater and recreational areas. Several schools, including Gwendolyn Brooks Elementary School and an adjacent playground, are also within walking distance of the development. Older children attend Clinton Rosette Middle School and DeKalb Senior High School. New stores like Starbucks and Big Lots have recently opened in the immediate area.

To reach Wineberry, take I-88 west to Annie Glidden Road, north to Bethany Road, east to Sangamon Road, north to Cutler and west to the sales center at 623 Kenwood Court. Hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. For more information call (815) 748-1100 or visit www.eaglehomesinc.com.
